At the risk of sounding basic, I'd like to confess a not-so-secret-secret: I'm obsessed with the Kardashians. Well the Jenners too (mainly Kendall & Kylie, duh... still perplexed with the Caitlyn situation and unless you're Brody I don't really care about the rest of the clan so I am mostly really talking about the younger step sisters who are associated with the Kardashians via mama Kris.)
Anyways, I enjoy following Kylie on Snapchat for the simple reason that she fascinates me. I could watch her Snapchats all day. Not much goes on besides her rapping the wrong words to songs and pursing her lips, but she looks fabulous and she has cute dogs so I'm all about it. She's always talking about her Kylie Cosmetics line on Snapchat, and she's a freaking genius for marketing herself this way. I was 32306890% more inclined to make a purchase from her because she's constantly showing the shades on her arms, telling you what color her friends are wearing, and sending selfies from the lab where her products are made...which shows me she's super passionate about it (or at least really good at marketing herself to look that way.)
I kept seeing people talk about how great her lip kits were, but she has nice plump lip fillers that look wonderful with lipstick, and unfortunately I am a human that has no lips that is not about to commit to plastic surgery. However, I am also a human that likes to wear lip color. I am also a very greasy human and a very hungry human, so my lip colors are always needing to be reapplied, and TBH that's exhausting and messy. I avoid wearing a lot of the products I already own because they don't stay on!
I previously worked at Sephora for a few years, and although I would NOT by any means consider myself a makeup expert, I WOULD consider myself a makeup enthusiast. Sephora is great because you can try on all kinds of stuff in the store. Even if a price tag is a little high, you can try it on there and be sure of what you're buying. The only thing keeping me from purchasing any of the Kylie Cosmetics products until now had been that I couldn't go try them on anywhere... and because they seemed a little pricey. And also because they apparently sell out in like 7 seconds when Kylie cryptically announces their release times on her app (which I don't have.)
So a few days before my birthday, Kylie announced on Snapchat that she was re-releasing the "Birthday Edition" and I was like yooo I don't know what that is but it's my birthday too so this must be God telling me that I needed to look more Kardashian-like or something. It was way more $$ than I wanted to spend, and honestly more products than I had wanted to buy, but since it was such a limited time thing and it was also my birthday, I was like this might be the best bang for my buck as far as getting all these products at once. (Honestly if you broke down the individual costs of everything it included it really was a good deal.)
MY FIRST KYLIE COSMETICS PURCHASE ATTEMPT IS GOING DOWN IN T-16 MIN THIS IS NOT A DRILL— Jordan Hefler (@JordanHefler) August 31, 2016
I sat at my computer and started refreshing her website at like 4:59 and was able to check out by 5:02 (they went live at 5PM.) I'm not sure how long it took for them to sell out, but it was super stressful.
I FEEL SO MUCH STRESS THIS IS EQUIVALENT TO SCHEDULING CLASSES IN COLLEGE OR TRYING TO GET THROUGH TO RADIO DISNEY ON THE PHONE WHEN I WAS 8— Jordan Hefler (@JordanHefler) August 31, 2016
I'm not going to really go into detail about what all came in the bundle, because she's not offering it anymore and I don't want to get you all excited about a kit that doesn't exist anymore. You can see a picture below of what was going on with it.
I am going to throw it out there that I have severely weird skin... it's greasy and dry at the same time, and also super sensitive to new products. Although the bundle came with her new Kyliner kit, I knew immediately that I wasn't going to be messing with that (for fear of severe allergic reaction... I don't have any desire to change my current liquid liner which is Kat Von D Tattoo liner in "Trooper" btw if you were wondering)
I was scared to try the creme shadows for the same reason, but so far so good! No allergic reactions. And as far as her lip colors go, I have tried them all and am going to say that out of all the ones I got I REALLY like 3 of them: "Koko K", "Candy K", and "Leo". The rest are all good too, just kind of similar to be honest. And maybe not as flattering with my skin tone. "Dolce K" is SUPER dark on me, and I'm cool with dark but it's a little too brown for me. And "Exposed" is the complete opposite on me. You know how Kim K can wear nude lips and look chic? I look like a corpse. "Kristen" looks pretty similar to "Leo", just not as dark. So I only photographed myself with a few of the colors for this post.
I've had a lot of experience wearing different products and seeing how they wear over the course of a day, and in the short period of time that I've had these lip colors, I can tell you that they are probably the best lip colors I've ever owned. The other day for instance I put on one of the Matte Liquid Lipsticks at 11:30AM and photographed sessions until 7PM and it was still on when I got home. UNCANNY YAWL. I EVEN ATE TACO BELL IN MY CAR THAT DAY AND NEVER REAPPLIED.
In terms of longterm wear, these things do not budge. AT ALL. Which means you have to put it on even from the get go (which I'm terrible at because, like, NO LIPS I already told you. You'll be able to tell from the photos)
All in all it was a pretty solid purchase. I love the "Poppin" gloss. At first I felt like J-Lo circa '97 when I put it on but once you rub it in it looks pretty great over any color.
The Metal Matte lipstick in "Lord" is a little metallic (ok a lot metallic) but it was fun to take selfies with for this blog post ha! I'm not sure how often I'll wear it in public because it's a little high fashion for good ole Baton Rouge.... but it is gold, so it may make an appearance at an LSU football game. We'll see.
Everything that I'm not crazy about is being sold to a friend (you didn't think I was going to spend a bajillion dollars on this and just be like "meh" to the things I didn't like did you? You can't just waltz on down to Walgreens and get this, REALLY I'M THE PLUG)
Now that I've tried her stuff and I know the quality of it (and tried to wash it off my arm... the lip colors still haven't come off via multiple baby wipes... if you check my snapchat for the next 24 hours you'll be able to see) I would totally recommend it to anyone! I have heard that the Colour Pop products are pretty similar (something about how they are made in the same lab or something? IDK) but I still love me some Kylie. I haven't tried the Colour Pop products myself so I'm not really at liberty to say anything about how they are.
Even though Kylie comes from a super privileged and well known family, I think that she has made some impressive business decisions at her age, and made quite a name for herself on her own. If she's as involved with Kylie Cosmetics as she markets herself to be, then I'm cool with paying for the branding because it's legit. And the bottom line is that her products work.
